BIG UPDATE to Festival Schedule & Activities
Note time changes... check back for updates as plans unfold! Last Update Aug 3)

Health Unit's summer heat safety guidance

Who’s Most at Risk:

  • Infants, older adults, pregnant people

  • Those working or exercising outdoors

  • People with chronic conditions or limited access to cooling

  • Individuals experiencing homelessness

Key Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Prepare: Wear light clothing, bring water and shade (umbrella, hat), and avoid caffeine and alcohol. Close blinds during the day to keep indoor spaces cooler.

  • Sun Safety & Medication: Use sunscreen, and talk to your doctor about medications that may affect temperature regulation.

  • Slow Down: Limit strenuous outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., take frequent breaks in the shade, and reduce intensity if wearing a mask.

  • Cool Down: Visit air-conditioned spaces, public beaches, or splash pads. Take cool baths, sponge off, or mist with water and use fans (especially at night).

  • Stay Connected: Regularly check in on vulnerable neighbours and family.

  • Don’t Leave Pets or People in Cars: Even with windows cracked, temperatures rise dangerously in minutes.

Tips for bringing pets to public summer events

  • Is This Right for Your Pet? – Not all animals enjoy crowds or noise. Know their limits.

  • Hydration & Heat: – Bring water and a collapsible bowl. Avoid midday sun. Use cooling mats or damp towels to help prevent overheating.

  • Paw Protection: – Hot pavement can burn paws. Use shaded areas or paw protection.

  • Noise Sensitivity: – Fireworks and music can stress animals. Bring a safe carrier or leave early if needed.

  • Safety: – Supervise pets at all times. Use a sturdy leash or carrier. Be mindful of food on the ground and unknown animals.

  • ID and Essentials: – Make sure they have ID tags and a microchip. Bring waste bags, medications, and a recent photo just in case.

  • Final Thought: Sometimes the kindest thing is to leave pets at home in a safe, cool environment.

We’d love to hear from you! Whether you have questions, feedback, memories to share, or just want to say hello, feel free to reach out.
